Iris has a BSc in chemistry from the University of Waterloo, and a PhD in environmental chemistry from the University of British Columbia. Iris has been at RMC since 1999 and has been a leader at ESG for over 20 years.
In the last 20 years, she has set up and managed the analytical lab at ESG and developed the first analytical chemistry course at RMC. Iris has collaboratively (with other academic groups and consulting groups) developed policy for Health Canada for incorporating bioaccessibility/bioavailability into human health risk assessments. She was a co-author on a risk assessment for the Kingston Inner Harbour, and has written or overseen several human health and ecological risk assessments for Parks Canada and DND, as well as for research projects in Yellowknife. She is also responsible for procuring funding for, managing projects and delivering reports involving bioaccessibility and arsenic speciation analysis of soils, sediments, fish and other tissues for sponsors like Public Works and Government Services Canada (now PSPC), as well as private consulting groups like Golder (now WSP), Stantec, Glencore, Dillon, and Intrinsik. She supervises and co-ordinates laboratory work conducted by technical research assistants to support these projects, as well as PFAS analysis for various DND and research projects. As research lead, she oversees research projects at ESG together with Dr. Weber, with a recent focus on those involving PFAS remediation. As an adjunct professor, she supervises graduate and fourth year students (co-supervised by Dr. Jennifer Scott and Dr. Reimer when they were at RMC, and currently Dr. Weber at RMC, and Dr. Kevin Mumford and Dr. Diane Beauchemin at Queen’s University). She has participated in field work to support the DEW Line Cleanup Project, as well as for many research and other technical projects.
Iris works at home a lot, just outside of Kingston, but loves talking to students and colleagues when she is at RMC. During her off-time some of her favourite things to do are playing hockey and gardening.
