Expertise

Our multi-disciplinary make-up, and our decades of experience in the environmental field, support our core specialties: contaminated site assessment, risk management and remediation; GIS, data management & technical guidance; and environmental monitoring & ecological services, including support for deployed operations.

Assessment & Remediation

Environmental Site Assessment

ESG has been conducting Phase I, II, and III environmental site assessments (ESAs) since the early 1990s, starting in the Arctic with the DEW Line Cleanup Project. Since then, we have done ESAs at federal sites across Canada, mostly focussed on soil and groundwater, but we also have a niche specialty in aquatic contaminated sites.

Environmental Remediation

ESG has been helping to clean up contaminated sites for three decades. We develop remedial action plans and provide quality assurance during remediation projects. We also develop new treatment methods for contaminated groundwater and soil, and we field test pilot scale technologies.

Human Health and Ecological Risk Assessment

ESG is a leader in the field of evaluating human health and ecological risk posed by contaminated sites, both terrestrial and aquatic. We also work with our sponsors to clearly communicate human health and environmental risk to a diverse range of audiences.

Data Management and Technical Guidance

Geographic Information Systems

We transform rows of environmental data into powerful, intuitive maps - from implementation layouts to hydrological and conceptual models. Our GIS tools integrate wildlife observations, species-at-risk habitat, and contaminated site data, helping sponsors visualize patterns, make informed decisions, and manage complex projects without getting lost in spreadsheets. We make the story behind the data easy to see.

Data Management

The team conducts surveys during the field season, and that data is combined with years of historical records and spreadsheets to support robust geodatabase and map creation. Our process ensures everything stays current, consistent, and accessible. Through rigorous quality assurance, we keep environmental information reliable and ready to support mapping, analysis, and informed decision-making.

Technical Reviews and Scientific Guidance Development

ESG has developed scientific guidance on aspects of contaminated sites management for the Federal Contaminated Sites Action Plan (FCSAP) and delivers associated training courses. ESG also conducts comprehensive literature reviews of best management practices and other topics.

Field & Ecological Services

Environmental Monitoring

ESG develops and implements compliance monitoring programs for large, complex sites, and we also develop and review long-term monitoring (LTM) programs at contaminated sites. We also design, implement, and interpret benthic invertebrate monitoring programs.

Wildlife at Risk / Invasive Species

ESG assesses the potential impact of activities on species at risk - to support management planning for wildlife at risk - and develops tools to help manage invasive species. Methodology includes extensive consultation, site visits, literature review, and ecological expertise to support management planning.

Deployed Operations Support

ESG provides sampling equipment, analysis and scientific support to DND for Environmental Baseline and Closeout assessments for deployed operations.
