Beginning as a summer student at ESG in 1999, Darren quickly developed a deep interest in environmental work, particularly in remote and northern regions. After earning a Bachelor's degree in Biology from Queen’s University in 2000, he returned to ESG for a second summer before transitioning into a full-time role where he continues to work with contaminated sites and project management. He is motivated by supporting the Canadian Armed Forces and to allow them to operate, train and be effective while maintaining good environmental stewardship.
Early in his career, Darren contributed to the DEW Line Cleanup Project, focused on remediating Cold War-era radar stations scattered across the Canadian Arctic—an experience that shaped professional focus on the assessment and remediation of abandoned military sites.
With a strong interest in identifying contaminant sources and understanding their pathways, Darren has conducted environmental assessments at numerous remote sites throughout Canada, as well as a unique international project in Iceland. These efforts have directly informed decisions for effective site remediation, often under challenging logistical and environmental conditions. In the process, Darren has traveled to locations around the world that few people have had the opportunity to visit, gaining rare insight into the environmental challenges facing isolated and historically significant sites. In 2004, Darren joined ESG’s management team, and in 2018, advanced to the senior management team, where he continues today to provide technical leadership and strategic guidance on complex environmental projects across the country.
Outside of work, Darren is passionate about community involvement, particularly youth development. A dedicated soccer coach, Darren actively volunteers time coaching local youth soccer teams, fostering teamwork, discipline, and confidence in young athletes. When not on the field, Darren enjoys spending time outdoors, swimming in lakes, and relaxing at the cottage.
